This is a native Okinawan species that was introduced from China about 600 years ago.Because the number of pigs born per litter was small and the pigs grew slowly, after the war many Okinawan pig farmers switched to producing Western breeds of pigs.In recent years, Agu pork has come to be recognized for its deep, nutritious flavor and its healthiness - it has 2.5 times the amino acids that give it umami, but only a quarter of the cholesterol - and so it has begun to be produced from the few Agu pork remaining in research institutes and agricultural schools.(Ganaha Livestock, Nago City)
